Summary

In Chapter 37, set in 1944, Hugo waited for Sofia all night but instead, two German soldiers came and took Hugo captive. The car in which Hugo was riding finally stopped by some other German military vehicles. Some of the Germans began to run as an American plane dropped a bomb, causing the gas tank on one of the vehicles to explode. Hugo was thrown out of his vehicle when the driver was shot and killed. He tried to crawl away but the gas tank on that vehicle exploded and he lost consciousness.
