Summary

In Chapter 29, set in 1973, Renzo and Joanna explored the house where Renzo had been raised but could find no place that Sofia could have hidden Hugo there.

After the celebration, Paola decided to take Francesca, Gianni’s widow, some food. Joanna volunteered to go with her. Francesca told Paola that she suspected it was someone from the village who had killed her husband. When Francesca learned that Joanna was looking for information about her father, Francesca told her that Gianni had seen an English pilot being taken away by the Germans.
