Summary

Chapter 6 returns to 1944. Hugo was shocked to learn the Allies has been responsible for bombing the monastery but the woman told him that it was the Germans who made the monks leave and had used the monastery as a lookout point. Once the woman helped him into the shelter of the ruins, the woman suggested he could use pieces of broken wood inside to build a shelter. She gave him some chestnuts to eat and promised to come back with more food but Hugo feared that it would be too dangerous for her. She told him that her husband had been missing for three years. She hoped if someone were to find him, they would help him like she was helping Hugo. She introduced herself as Sofia Bartoli.
