Summary
In Chapter Eight: Cost of Living, Kamala thinks of her childhood and mother, including a recipe her mother made every Christmas that Kamala found. She says that her mother was always doing something, and if something went well at work, she would bring flowers for the babysitter as a thank you. Then she shifts to Dr. King’s Poor People’s Campaign. Kamala describes how Black sanitation workers were forced to work in their own clothes and often came home with maggots and garbage clinging to them. There was no overtime pay and they received barely more than minimum wage. Workers went on strike after two families were refused compensation for the death of their family members while on the job. King gave a speech about how tired people are of searching for well-paying jobs while living in poverty. A...
