Summary
In Chapter Three: Underwater, Kamala says her family was renters for most of her childhood and it took years to save money for their own house. She traveled to Fresno, California in the midst of a foreclosure crisis. People in Fresno often drove six hours for jobs in other cities but were living the American Dream. After 9/11, banks dropped interest rates, and lenders aggressively lured people with zero down and interest only offers. They promised people that they would refinance their mortgages before payments increased. Then, Wall Street investors would buy securities based on these mortgages. This led to homes losing their value while mortgage payments almost doubled.
It is at this point that Kamala includes a set of pictures of her own life, ranging from pictures of her parents, her mother’s activism, her childhood, and her campaign.
