Summary

Chapter 64 consists mainly of a list of names of lynching victims, which Damon is described as writing out on paper with a pencil. The list is interrupted halfway through by Damon explaining to Mama Z that writing the names of the victims made them real, and that when he was done, he would erase them to set them free. The list includes Black victims of lynching, such as Emmett Till, as well as names of Black victims of more recent police shootings, such as Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, and Tamir Rice. There are also several names belonging to Chinese victims of racial violence, Matthew Shepard, and placeholders for unnamed victims such as “unknown male” (183).
