Summary
In Chapter 6, “High School,” throughout high school, Andrés wanted to be like his white peers. “White was safe,” while “Black was different” (61, 62). As a Latino, Andrés was unsure where he fit in. Over the years, being “liked by everyone” became a drug (63).
The first time Andrés and Jeremy met, they got into a fight over a seat. Paul made comments. Simone felt sorry for Andrés when he got punished.
In Chapter 7, “Mom & Dad,” the morning after the reunion, Rosario questions Andrés about the event. He is evasive. Rosario thanks Andrés for coming to “take care” of them (69).
