Summary
Third-person narration. The story begins with a poetic description of a first snowfall on the Spokane Indian Reservation, and of how the ghosts of a circle of male singing musicians, themselves the sons of a circle of singing women, sang mournful songs into the wind.
The narrative then shifts focus into the story of Roman Gabriel Fury, a former professional basketball player who never really made the big leagues, and his wife Grace. Perspective shifts back and forth through time, at one point repeating the same narrative event – Roman bringing Grace her morning coffee – from the different points of view of the two main characters.
