Summary
Franz runs to the grotto and sneaks into the show. After it ends, he finds Anezka, who informs him that Heinzi was taken away by the Gestapo for his jokes about Hitler. Franz tells Anezka that he is afraid the Nazis might round up the Bohemians next, and offers to take her to Salzkammergut and marry her. At this point, an officer in uniform walks in, and Franz boldly tells him to take him away instead of Anezka. Then Anezka walks over to the officer and kisses him on the cheek. Franz realizes they are together and leaves, feeling demoralized.
Pfründer comes to the tobacconist’s and informs Franz that Freud is fleeing to England. Franz immediately puts down his accounting books and makes his way to the Berggasse so that he can say farewell to his friend. Two members of the...
