Summary
Franz wakes up and finds the Bohemian girl has abandoned him. He takes a ride in the Ferris wheel and angrily punches the seat.
The next day, Franz is awoken by a racket, and walks outside to discover that the tobacconist’s has been defaced. Otto is screaming at the butcher, Rosshuber, who (according to Otto) is responsible for the graffiti on the side of the tobacconist’s window, which depicts the words “Jew lover” and a lewd drawing. Though Otto loudly proclaims that Rosshuber wears the swastika and puts sawdust in his sausages, Rosshuber calmly denies his culpability, and Otto storms inside.
For the next several weeks, Franz keeps returning to the Prater and looking for the Bohemian girl, but does not meet her. He also becomes plagued by dreams of pig’s blood dripping from the ceiling.
