New York City

New York City is the most populous city in the United States of America. At the beginning of the novel, Barney, Leo, Roni, Richard, and Emily are all residents of New York City. New York City is also the location of P.P. Layouts. The city’s climate is defined by extreme temperature highs during the day. At various points in the novel, Barney and Leo leave the city (and Earth) to pursue various tasks on other celestial bodies.

Mars

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. The minimum distance between Mars and Earth is about 34 million miles. In the novel, Earth has established multiple colonies on Mars. Barney is drafted to join a Mars colony, and he ultimately does not resist the draft. Life on the colony is generally defined by boredom and desolation.
