Wife
The wife is one of the novel’s main characters. She narrates Part 1 of the novel from her first person point of view. Her character remains unnamed throughout. In the narrative present, the wife has been married to the husband for three years. The wife’s best friend Temi is shocked that the marriage has lasted this long. In a way, Temi blames herself because she “introduced her to him” (153). However, she never expected the wife to marry the husband. This is because the wife and Temi have been friends since they were children. Temi knows the wife well and feels that her life in the present is the antithesis of the life that she and the wife were planning for themselves as independent women.
