Summary

In Chapter 41 after the lecture session of Smith’s disputation during which Smith theatrically displayed the handcuffs, the iron dentures and the revolver used by Valentin, Aune asked Smith how he had prepared his dissertation since his conclusion was supported only by the evidence found in Lenny Hell’s house. Smith passed the question off by claiming that Valentin had not completely fit his definition of a vampirist until the new information was uncovered. He thanked the dissertation committee for letting him make changes to his work at the last minute.

During a break, Smith saw Steffens walk into the room and asked Harry why he was there. When Steffens and Wyller caught sight of each other they both stiffened. Steffens told Oleg he had to leave but Oleg insisted that he stay and let things run their course.
