Havana, Cuba 2015
This is where the present-day events happen. Clare travels to Havana for a film festival to honor her late husband. While there, she sees her husband for the first time five weeks after his death. Clare is disoriented from the moment she steps of the plan. She is in a new country by herself where she does not speak the language fluently. A large part of Claire’s identity is being a traveler, but in Cuba, that changes. She loses her ability to read sign for directions and part of her independence. It matches what Yuniel Mata, a director, said about taking away a person’s compass of the world and giving them a second compass with a whole new set of truths (9). Clare has now entered a horror film, losing her sense of being and direction, while figuring out how to navigate this strange new world...
