Summary
In Chapter 32, narrated by Alice, Alice and Zofia next visit the Trzebinia Medical Clinic, built in memory of Alesky Slaski. Zofia explains to the woman at the desk they believe Alesky might be Alice’s great-grandfather, the woman says that is not possible because she is Alesky’s great-granddaughter. She claims her mother was Alesky’s only child.
The woman, Lia Truchen, thinks Alice wants money from her grandmother, but Alice assures the woman she just wants to reconnect with Emilia because Emilia’s brother, Tomasz Slaski, was Alice’s grandfather. Lia claims that is not possible because Tomasz died in 1942. She adds she visits his grave with her grandmother. They argue politely before Lia asks them to leave. Determined, Alice gives Lia her phone number in case she decides to talk.
