Summary
In Chapter 26, narrated by Alina, Tomasz took Alina to visit his friends, Saul and Eva. Tomasz pointed out to Alina the rock Saul and Eva left as a sign it was safe. Both Saul and Eva were emaciated, but they were excited to meet Alina. Eva told Alina the food her family had given them was the only reason Tikva, their baby, was still alive. When Alina held Tikva, she was shocked by how light she was and how thin her face was. Saul told Alina her name was the Hebrew word for hope. Alina understood that Tikva was Eva and Saul’s reason for living.
