Summary
In the beginning of Chapter Twenty-Two, Aunt Lydia tells Nicole, Agnes, and Becka about the raid and Commander Judd’s intentions to marry Nicole “to increase his own prestige” (353). Consequently, Agnes and Nicole must leave tomorrow, but they must be smuggled out of the country as they cannot wait to leave via the missionary plane. She also tells Becka that she must hide herself for two days, so that it will look like she has gone with Agnes. Becka agrees, and suggests that they will account for Nicole’s absence by writing a note, saying that she ran off to get married to an Economan. Later that night, Aunt Lydia brings supplies to the girls’ room and tells them the plan: Nicole and Agnes will leave early in the morning, be driven out to a city in New Hampshire, and be taken to another...
