Relationships
One of the primary themes running through the novel is relationships. The novel reveals that even the individuals that make up a family have different relationships among the family members. For example, Calwyn is very close to Marna, who is like a surrogate mother to her. Calwyn is not as close to other sisters of her family, such as Ursca and Tamen.
Friendship is another type of relationship the novel tackles. It seems as if Calwyn and Darrow's friends are more like "family" than just close friends. Even with the close bonds of friendship, there are moments of tension. For example, Mica and Calwyn get into an argument right before Calwyn leaves on her journey to find Samis. Mica dies before the girls are able to reconcile, so this is a guilt that Calwyn will have to overcome or live with for the rest of her life. Although...
