The Effects of a Broken Relationship
From the opening pages of the story, Trixie is heartbroken over her recent breakup with Jason. She tells Jason that she can't go on without him. Though her words may seem melodramatic, the reader sees her pain over the coming days as she begins cutting herself. She confides to her counselor that the cutting helps her deal with the pain and that the physical pain makes sense in ways the emotional pain cannot. Trixie's heartbreak drives a great deal of the rest of the story. It is revealed at the end of the book that Trixie lied about telling Jason she didn't want to have sex and that she'd actually been heartbroken again when she learned that he wasn't interested in a renewed relationship with her.
