Structure

The memoir is divided into 44 chapters. Each is identified by name and number. Most of the chapters are named for one or more people who play a role in Moehringer life. Many are identified by name, nickname, or pseudonym. For example, Chapter 2 is titled “The Voice.” In this chapter, Moehringer was a child who listened to the radio in order to hear his father as a DJ. Moehringer thought of him as “the Voice.” Chapter 15 is titled “Bill and Bud.” Moehringer met the two men named Bill and Bud at a bookstore, and their influence prompted him to set his sights on Yale. Chapter 24 is titled “Father Amtrak.” In this chapter, Moehringer met a priest on the train. Moehringer referred to him simply as Father Amtrak.
