Summary
Chapter 41 is titled “Hugo.” McGraw gave in and had the surgery doctors said would repair his shoulder. Moehringer bought him a plane ticket to return to school. Jimbo drove them to a baseball game at Shea Stadium, then to the airport. Ruth berated Moehringer daily until he found a woman named Magdalena with a room to rent. Moehringer was shocked to discover a parrot named Hugo “lived” in the bathroom. Magdalena's mother came to escape Hurricane Hugo. Moehringer returned to the apartment one day to discover Magdalena's mother had wrecked the place. She was upset that she was alone and no one answered her calls. Moehringer moved out, sleeping on a friend's couch for awhile before returning to Grandpa's.
