Summary

Chapter 6 is titled “The First Such Mishap of the Twentieth Century.” Russell says there is yet another “bad omen” before they get home from Miss Myrt's funeral. The family has a good buggy, but they have to use the wagon when the entire family travels. On this day, Lloyd is on the seat with O.C., while Tansy, Aunt Maud, and Russell stand in the back. Russell hears a “banshee scream” and sees flashes of metal as the wagon pitches into the ditch. Tansy scampers into the ditch to help Aunt Maud who is upside-down with her skirts over her head to reveal “her summer drawers,” white knees, stockings, garters, and shoes. Russell has never seen this much of Aunt Maud. Aunt Maud reiterates that she is certainly going to be the next to die. As Tansy helps Aunt Maud, Russell takes note...
