Summary
In Chapter 29, "Pierson, 2009," when Pierson's economic issues worsen, Ken starts distance running. He and Becky spend increasing amounts of time together, attempting to save the town. As they work with a lawyer, Becky insists she "manage the flow of information" (281). As months pass, Becky hopes the Great Recession will make it difficult to tell "which flames consumed what" (283). One night after a legal meeting, Ken and Becky have dinner. Afterwards, Ken confesses his feelings for Becky. They kiss. Becky feels nothing. Ken apologizes. Another weekend, she and Ken spend a weekend away to resolve financial issues in Springfield. Ken suggests they give up with the lawyer and file for bankruptcy. At another meeting later, a legal team confronts them about misappropriated money. When Ken starts arguing, Becky rushes him out of the room. In the car, Ken is frantic. Becky tries explaining it...
