Summary
In Chapter 8, "Chicago, 1987," Becky visits "Chicago's massive Merchandise Mart" on the "Art Expo's opening day" (75). She plans to use RF Capital Development's $42,000 to purchase an Eric Fischl painting. The piece will be her trading piece. However, the gallery owner says all the paintings are promised to other collectors. When Becky tries outbidding them, the woman turns away.
Becky sits in a bar, beside herself. She has committed a faux pas. A man, who introduces himself as Mac, notices her demeanor. She explains what happened. As a member of the art world, he promises to help her. They go back to his apartment. He insists on calling her Reba. Becky is impressed by his flat. In the coming weeks, Mac becomes her mentor, teaching her about art collecting, introducing her to all the right people. Becky often stays the night in his guest room...
