Merfolk and Humankind
The Tail of Emily Windsnap is a fanciful tale of a young adolescent girl who learns that she is different from everyone else in her class, and in her world. Emily's mother Mary has a fear of water that keeps her daughter out of it as well until she begins high school. She finally convinces her mother to allow her to attend swimming lessons, and during the first one, she sprouts a mermaid's tail. Horrified at first, she is grateful to discover that the tail disappears again when she leaves the water, and that no one in her class had noticed. Claiming her behavior was due to leg cramps, she is excused for the remainder of the lesson, and begins looking for a way out of the next one immediately.
