Point of View
The Tail of Emily Windsnap is a young adults fiction that is told entirely from the perspective of the main character - a twelve year old girl named Emily. Using a first person perspective, author Liz Kessler weaves a whale of a tale about a young girl who has just discovered that she is half mermaid. This is a legitimate and appropriate narrative to use as Emily is discussion her personal journey from discovering she is part mermaid to rescuing the father she thought long gone.
The narration is consistent throughout, giving the reader insights into Emily's own personal thoughts and feelings but refraining from doing so with the other main characters. Their contributions to the story are confined to their own observations, or Emily's feelings and perspectives where they are concerned.
