Summary
The courtroom is silent as Emily and the others wait for a response. When Neptune returns, he calls to Emily and her mother who stand up for the verdict. He announces that they’ve defied his laws and him and tells them that they have a lot of nerve suggesting that a law he created was wrong. Emily wonders how much time she’ll have to serve as Neptune leans forward, but when he speaks again, his voice is softer. He admits that despite everything, they’ve touched on a situation that is beyond law and therefore beyond punishment as well.
He tells them that although they defied his laws, they will both be released; adding that he won’t pretend that he doesn’t understand or that he’d never felt that way himself. As such, he turns to Mary and tells...
