Summary
Emily, Mary, Shona and Millie are separated and put in small cages with little room for more than a bed. Emily passes time counting weeds, limpets and anything else she can find. A guard brings food but Emily isn’t brave enough to even try it. She lies on the bed and counts the minutes until a guard wakes her. She is handcuffed and refuses to answer any of her questions as he drags her into a smaller cell.
It isn’t long this time before the guard returns and takes her down the long tunnel-like hallways to a big house with marble pillars out front. As the gates open, Emily is taken into the lobby which boasts chandeliers of crystal; trails of shells dangling from silver threads; an underwater fountain and a volcano that shoots out green clouds of light.
