Summary
Emily’s mother waves goodbye to her and as soon as she turns away, Emily runs down to the beach and under the pier. She swims out to Rainbow Rocks to meet Shona and then head out across Shiprock Bay. At its farthest tip, Shona begins to swim down and then vanishes through a large gap in the rock. She swims back out, grabbing Emily by the hand and guiding her through the tunnel that finally opens in a huge hole in the rock. Caves are everywhere and tunnels head off in all directions like a huge rabbit warren underwater.
Emily is surprised to discover hundreds of merpeople including all ages from merelders to merbabies. Mrs. Tailspin warns Shona that the bell is in five minutes and Shona explains that she teaches history – Shona’s first class. A sound like a foghorn calls...
