Summary
Chapter 26 shifts focus back to Caleb and Prentiss, who continue to flee northward. They stick to the woods, wishing to keep their whereabouts hidden. They discuss what type of life and work they would want to pursue in the North. Prentiss even entertains the thought that, maybe, he could have a happy life. In Chapter 27, Isabelle has a burial for George. She puts up signs around town to advertise that work is available on her farm, open to all people regardless of background. Soon, people begin to appear, in response to the ad. Isabelle begins renting the land to people of various races and backgrounds. She is hopeful that, with the presence of the Federal soldiers in Old Ox, none of the locals will attempt to sabotage the farm or attack the people working the land.
