Geppetto
Geppetto is The Swallowed Man’s main character. He is a wood carver from the small town of Collodi and was born into a family of pottery painters. The family business centered on painting a particular pattern onto pottery, and from a young age, Geppetto was trained to reproduce this pattern. Despite time and effort, he could never manage to copy the pattern correctly. His failure led to a rift with his father and also led Geppetto to pursue wood carving rather than the family business.
As a young man, Geppetto was involved in a series of failed romances with four different women, Agnese, Sylvestra, Jacopa, and Antonella. In each case, circumstances intervened to keep the young lovers apart and Geppetto was left alone after each affair.
