Clachan Fells
This small town is the novel’s primary setting. It is a valley surrounded by a beautiful landscape of mountains and greenery that contrasts Dylan’s city life. The contrast emphasizes the openness and peaceful change that his life is about to undergo.
The Mountain Range
The characters venture out into the mountain range on two main occasions. First, Dylan has a transcendent experience while climbing, during which he is engulfed by fog and connects with a deer. This is a pivotal moment in the text as it is the first time we truly see Dylan at peace. Constance, Dylan and Stella also climb up a mountain to view the iceberg from a height, another stunning experience during which they connect with the landscape around them. The mountains signify the raw power of nature and the transcendence nature can provide.
