Dylan MacRae
Dylan MacRae is a very tall man, quite intimidating due to the fact that most of his body is covered in tattoos. Despite this, he is a soft soul, never speaking very much unless spoken to and generally minds his own business. He cares deeply about those around him and is acutely aware of the social issues that affect them. He falls in love and feels deeply for those around him, and is greatly affected by their losses.
Dylan may well be considered the protagonist of the novel, as much of the plot is centered around his arrival to Clachan Fells. The novel begins when Dylan travels up from London, where he lived in his family-run cinema named Babylon, to the small town of Clachan Fells.
