Summary
The Alabama Supreme Court refuses to rule until it is determined whether or not Ray's original ballistics expert, Payne, was qualified. The case is bounced back to Jefferson County where a new judge, Laura Petro, confirms that she believes Judge Garrett thought Payne was qualified at the time of the original trial. This useless ruling results in Ray's case being bounced back and forth around the different levels of Alabama Courts as they try to determine whether or not Payne was qualified. Bryan never gives up but Ray starts to get discouraged that, despite all the new evidence, Alabama seems determined to ignore the fact of his innocence. In 2013, Ray's appeal is denied yet again. Ray is tired and knows he does not have many more options. Bryan then offers him a choice: they can file a writ of habeas corpus to claim...
