Summary

Without an attorney working on an appeal, Ray fears getting an execution date. He writes a letter to Bryan Stevenson and calls him on the phone to explain his situation and to ask him to be his lawyer. Bryan is surprised and apologetic that Alan Black asked Ray for money, as his organization, the Equal Justice Initiative, is a non-profit designed to help the poor. Bryan visits Ray, listens to his story, and promises to do everything he can to help him. Unlike his past attorney's, Bryan is willing to listen to Ray's ideas about his case. Ray says that he needs the best ballistics expert possible and he needs to be Southern, male, white, and racist, but honest: the kind of man who believes in the death penalty and would want Ray executed if he was guilty.
