Harry and Alma Brettigan have lived here for years, and raised their children in the same neighborhood where they live in the narrative present. Although the city has been their home for decades, Brettigan finds the place increasingly unfamiliar to him. He is troubled by all the changes he sees, and often reflect on how the place he has known for so long could feel so foreign.
