Summary
In Part Five, Chapter 26, after the accident, Christina's friends "came by to see her" (263). Ludlow was dead, but "she could not grieve" for him (266). Then one day, an officer named Detective Dennis O'Connor came to visit. He had questions about the accident, because there had been no skid marks at the scene. He wanted to know if Christina and Ludlow had been having relationship problems. She insisted they had not, and that she loved him. Though the detective was skeptical, he decided not to charge her with "involuntary vehicular manslaughter" (271). He also explained that Ludlow's real name was Mark Bagley, that he had a daughter, and that his parents were in town. It would be up to Christina to contact them.
After the detective left, Christina realized "She was responsible for someone's death" (271, Baxter's italics). She was overcome by remorse.
