Cycles of Healing
Throughout The Sun and her Flowers, Kaur engages in cycles of growth and regression, and through these cycles, she eventually comes to a place of healing and peace. In order to describe these cycles, Kaur compares herself to the natural world, saying that just like flowers, people must, at times, “wilt / fall / root / rise / in order to bloom” (114). In this way, Kaur asserts that only by undergoing the same cycles of the natural world—cycles from season to season, from winter to spring—can human beings truly “bloom” into the people they want to be. In effect, Kaur implies that at times, things will be harder (“wilting” and “falling” are part of the cycle, and therefore inevitably recur in human life), but that at other times, things will be easier (“blooming” always occurs).
