Summary
Kaur’s second chapter of poetry, “falling,” begins with Kaur confessing she “notice[s] everything [she] does not have” and “decide[s] it is beautiful” (59). She then reveals that her breakup “took something human” out of her, saying that although the breakup made her strong, she is not “so strong. that nothing. shakes her” (60). In the next poem, Kaur discovers that “depression is a shadow living inside [her]” (61). Kaur then writes an imagined conversation with her body, in which her body asks why she is “so unkind” to it, and Kaur responds, “cause you don’t look like them” (62).
“[H]ome” is the longest poem in the section, telling the story of how Kaur was raped by a family friend on what seemed to be a “typical Thursday” (68). Kaur tells of how she “decorated herself” in order to enjoy her appearance (68). She then reveals...
