Summary

Chapter 10 began Miranda’s recollections of the night of Fisher’s death. Mrs. Vargas made a phone call, and Joseph declared Fisher dead. Her memory returned with the arrival of the Coast Guard. She recognized the smell of death in Chapter 11. Miranda went along with Mrs. Vargas, who thought she was a priest. Mrs. Vargas claimed that Francisca had not forgiven her for stealing Vargas. Miranda was uncomfortable, but Mrs. Vargas insisted she confess, telling Miranda that she resolved to kill Fisher when she heard Francine was pregnant. Mrs. Vargas explained that she waited for Fisher in the lighthouse with a kitchen knife. She told Joseph she defended herself against Fisher.

Miranda met Isobel and the drunken priest outside and escorted them to Mrs. Vargas in Chapter 12. Isobel brought Miranda to the top of the lighthouse in Chapter 13. She turned...
