The Cape Cod House
The house in Cape Cod, owned by Ronnie, is a representation of her family’s history and Ronnie’s failing body. After being in the family for 40 years, the house has a sort of personality to it, something the author expresses by referring to it as a woman and having her narrate small pieces of the novel. Much of the family, however, has been avoiding the home, even though Ronnie wanted her grandchildren to build similar memories as her children. Ultimately, this is why the family keeps the house and returns Ronnie’s ashes to it, allowing her legacy to continue just as she hoped for.
