The Cape Cod house is the vacation home of Ronnie’s family that she and Lee bought 40 years prior to the novel's start. While Ronnie has many positive memories of the Cape Cod house, Sarah and Sam rarely visit and Ronnie feels that the memories are being wasted. She chooses to sell the house after Ruby’s wedding because she does not want to burden the family with a home they do not want or care to use.
