Sarah

Sarah is the wife to Eli, mother to Dexter and Miles, and stepmother to Ruby. She is also very close with her twin brother, Sam, and the daughter a rich former author named Ronnie. Throughout the early years of her life, Sarah had a dream of being a concert pianist. However, she gave up on that path to become a music teacher and eventually married Eli when Ruby was about eight years old. It took many years before Ruby accepted Sarah, but the two are much closer now than they were at the start. Sarah has an affair with Owen partway through the novel as she feels that Eli no longer cares for her. She regrets this after their second visit and resolves to be a better wife and mother than she was before.
