Aram
Aram is the protagonist and first person narrator of the short story. When Aram is nine years old, his cousin, Mourad, appears outside his window on an unfamiliar horse. Knowing how poor their family is, and how much they value honesty, Aram fears that Mourad has stolen the animal. Despite his misgivings, Aram accepts his cousin's invitation to ride the horse because he has always loved horses and wanted to learn how to ride for as long as he can remember.
While adventuring with Mourad, Aram notices how good his cousin is with the horse. He knows everyone thinks Mourad is wild, but he wants to be like his cousin. Aram asks him innumerable questions about the origin of the horse, and about learning to ride and understand the animal. No matter what he asks, however, Mourad offers him little information.
