The Island

The island is the setting where the entirety of the novel takes place. Sophia, Grandmother, and Papa live in a small house on a Finnish island. Sophia explores the island and the surrounding islands to grow more in touch with nature.

The Cairn

The Cairn is the setting where Sophia and Grandmother venture out by boat. It is the last island out in the Gulf of Finland. The sea is unusually calm when they venture out to the Cairn.

The forest

The forest is the setting where Sophia and Grandmother pretend they are surrounded by magic. The forest is largely dead and filled with rotting trees, but Sophia sees something special and untouched about the forest.
