Hugh Grange
Hugh Grange is a surgeon-in-training in his late twenties or early thirties, and studying under Sir Alex Ramsey when the novel begins. He is the nephew of Agatha and John Kent, and is the cousin of Daniel with whom Hugh is best friends. Hugh is very conservative and traditional, and has a compassionate heart that allows for a morally-founded tolerance of those like Daniel and Celeste. For much of the novel, Hugh seeks to marry Lucy, but falls in love with Beatrice instead.
Hugh, upon graduating and becoming a surgeon, enlists in the military and goes to France to save as many lives of wounded soldiers as he can. He is nearly killed during a bombardment which also claims the life of Daniel. Hugh attempts to save Daniel, Snout, and Harry Wheaton by getting them home, but only Harry survives.
