Yorkshire

The story’s main narrative takes place in Yorkshire, which is a province if the English countryside. Weigall and Gifford go there for an extended hunting trip with other guests. Weigall finds the other guests to be uninteresting. One day, Gifford goes mysteriously missing. Two night later, when walking in the nearby woods, Weigall sees someone drowning and believes it to be Gifford.

The Strid

The story’s climax takes place in an area called the Strid. It is defined by irregular rock formations, and by a river that flows into a cave. It is known to be a dangerous place where people have drowned. One night, when Weigall sees someone drowning there, he believes it to be Gifford. He pulls the person from the water, and he is then startled to see that the body has no face.
