Weigiall
The story’s point-of-view character is referred to only as Weigall. He is a wealthy, educated Englishman in his early thirties. He has been friends with Gifford since childhood, and Gifford is his closest friend. When Weigall and Gifford go to a countryside estate for a week of hunting, Weigall grows bored by the other guests. When Gifford disappears, Weigall tries not to panic. Weigall convinces himself that Gifford is merely playing a prank, as Gifford has played pranks in the past. One night, two days after Gifford’s disappearance, Weigall goes for a walk in the woods. He finds someone, whom he presumed to be Gifford, drowning in a river. After rescuing him, he sees that the body has no face.
