Summary
As Weigall continues his walk through the woods, he has the though that, if Gifford is playing a prank by disappearing, this prank is not as interesting as his past ones. Weigall then recalls a memory from a few years ago. He and Gifford had gone to a funeral together in London. The deceased was a man with whom they had been friends in college. For three years leading up to the man’s death, the man was in an asylum. When Weigall and Gifford had visited the man in the asylum, he was incapable of speech or expression. His face had seemed blank and unfamiliar.
However, when they viewed the body during the funeral, the face seemed more familiar, and almost more lively. Weigall and Gifford conversed after leaving the funeral. Gifford, seemingly making idle conversation, discussed the theory that humans’ souls...
