Summary and Analysis
"The Night of the Great Season," describes the hectic day of buying and selling that comes to the markets before winter. In his shop, Jacob wanders up and down, reluctant to sell the things he has made. A mob grows in the streets and fills the little shop, demanding merchandise, haggling prices and fighting with one another. Jacob reacts in anger. The description of the event is surreal and exaggerated. Jacob sees the mob as sinful. Looking out of the shop window, Jacob notices people pointing to the sky. The birds that Jacob had bred, and that Adela had turned out, fill the sky. They are beast like and terrible. Jacob tries to call the birds to him, but they have gone wild and do not know him. Then one by one people begin to throw stones and kill...
